Literature Text

"Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli," ~ Luke‬ ‭3‬:‭21-23‬

Do you know the significance of what is happening in this verse?  Before this Jesus was only indwelt by the Holy Spirit.  As soon as He was immersed in water (Baptism) which was to become a picture of what would happen three years later, the Holy Spirit totally filled Him.  Thus was the beginning of His public ministry and God the Father verifying His pleasure in Christ.  The dove is a symbol of peace, and often a symbol of the Holy Spirit.  The practical application for all born-again Christians is that after we accept Christ as our Savior, there needs to be a time when we also become Baptized like He was:  immersed in water.  Baptism is an outward sign of what has happened inside of us.  It is also our public declaration of being a born-again believer.

As for the Holy Spirit, we are indwelt when we are saved.  But the filling is dependent upon how we yield to the Holy Spirit.  The more we yield to the Holy Spirit, the more He is able to fill us.  Of all the members of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is the most sensitive to sin in our lives.  And one of the greatest offenses is when we treat Him like a Theological concept (saying He's not real) or a thing like the Force in Star Wars.  He is God and a person.  And He wants to be treated that way--as God and as a person.
